Google introduced offline Gmail.

Now it is possible to use your Gmail account in offline mode. This feature makes your Gmail a computer based Email account. After setting your account for offline mode you will be allowed to access all the features such as searching inbox, reading mails etc..

You are required to install Google Gears for your browser, so that it can store all your mails offline. After installing change the settings in your Gmail account (of course when you are online). And the rest will be done automatically.

How it works..?
Google Gears is an offline platform that supports your Gmail account to synchronize all your account data to your computer whenever you are online. And make it available to you in offline mode when you are not connected to internet. Google Gears stores all the changes that are made to your account such as composing or deleting mails and updates your online gmail account when your connection is established.
